Alberta Women’s Institutes – Georgina G. Stiven MacDonald Scholarship.
This yearly award is named after Georgina G. Stiven who was the first Superintendent of the AWI. Between 1912 and 1913, she travelled throughout Alberta on “The Mixed Farming Special” train giving demonstrations and lectures on nutrition, food preparation and cooking. ) she encouraged women across the province to form women’s institutes clubs.
This annual award is based upon student proficiency in the Office Administration program. The award value is $125.
Lakeland College
Alberta Women’s Institutes – Cornelia R. Wood Award
This yearly award is named after Cornelia R. Wood (1892-1985), of Stony Plain, who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for 23 years between 1940 and 1967. She was the first woman to be a sitting MLA and town mayor at the same time. Cornelia R. Wood compiled and edited several histories on the Alberta Women’s Institutes and wrote many articles for Home and Country. In 1981 she received the Persons Award from Governor General Schreyer.
This annual award is given to a first year female student enrolled in full-time studies at Lakeland College who demonstrates a satisfactory academic record and has made a positive contribution to the community and/or the college. The award amount varies from year-to-year.
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology
Alberta Women’s Institutes - Susan B. Stewart Award
The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) award was originally created for Fairview College at Fairview, Alberta. When Fairview College merged with NAIT, the award was transfer to NAIT for those studying at its northwest campuses.
This yearly award is named after Susan Barr Stewart (1886-1979)., who obtained a Master of Arts degree from Glasgow University and completed post-graduate work in France. She came to Peace River Crossing in 1913. She was a provincial president of Alberta Women’s Institutes from 1937 to 1941 and editor of the Home and Country newsletter from 1941 to 1943. During World War II she served in the German Division of the Censorship Department in Ottawa.
This annual award is given to a student in the Office Administration program on Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s Northwest Campuses. The award is based on outstanding performance and community involvement. The award value is $250.
